Your Salary Is Not Your Net Worth
We work with a lot of families who earn significant incomes, and a surprising number of them feel like they are not getting as far ahead as they expected to be by now.
The reason is usually the same. They are tracking income when they should be tracking net worth.
Income tells you what is coming in. Wealth is what accumulates. The space between the two is where most of the real financial work happens, and it is easy to lose track of.
A family earning $1,000,000 a year and spending $950,000 is building wealth, but slowly. A family earning $250,000 and spending $150,000 may be compounding much more effectively over time. The first number sounds more impressive. The second family is often in a stronger position.
Higher incomes tend to come with higher spending, and not always by deliberate choice. Taxes take more. Housing and private school and travel and the general cost of a certain kind of life all expand alongside earnings. None of those are the wrong choices, but they add up in ways that are easy to underestimate when things feel comfortable.
A few things we have noticed over time
Families who track their net worth consistently, rather than just watching their account balances, tend to make different decisions. Seeing the actual number move, or not move, creates a kind of clarity that income alone does not.
Spending tends to follow income by default unless there is some intention behind it. The question worth asking is whether the lifestyle choices you are making are ones you would choose deliberately, or whether they have simply accumulated over time as income has grown.
The families who build meaningful wealth are not always the highest earners. They are the ones who treat the gap between income and spending as something worth protecting and deploying with some care.
Your income got you here. What you keep and what you do with it is what determines where you end up.
